Dr. Fred Dirbas
Dr. Fred Dirbas is an internationally acclaimed surgeon and pioneer in the field of breast cancer who has been practicing medicine for over thirty years.
In his twenty five years at Stanford, Dr. Dirbas has established a robust clinical practice and has affected the lives of countless patients. Today, the questions that define his research are largely informed by his clinical practice and decades of experience working closely with patients. With the ultimate aim of improving patient care, Dr. Dirbas’ research seeks to advance breast cancer therapy by refining existing diagnostic and treatment options, and by introducing new methods that reduce side effects and enhance quality of life for patients. Dr. Dirbas has led the Stanford Clinical Breast Cancer Program from 2010 to 2017, and in 2017 which an anonymous poll of Medscape members ranked the Stanford clinical breast cancer program in a tie as the 7th most highly regarded clinical breast program in the country. He continues to be active in translational research projects in cancer biology and holds two patents in software design.
Dr. Dirbas has published nearly 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals. He is co-editor of the medical textbook Breast Surgical Techniques and Interdisciplinary Management, a comprehensive manual on breast disease addressing all aspects of the surgical management of both benign and malignant disease. As of 2019, over 200 thousand chapters have been downloaded from the online version of the book.
Dr. Dirbas has served on the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advisory Council since 2011, and supports the Medical Board of California as part of its Expert Reviewer Program. He received the Silicon Valley Wellness Foundation’s Star Caregiver Award in 2008, and has been named among the Best Doctors in America every year since 2009. Additionally, he is consistently recognized by Castle-Connolly as a top breast cancer specialist.
